Appearance: Jenna looks good for her age, enough that on rare
occasions people actually believe her when she says she’s 29. Her
hair is dyed blonde (though she would never admit it to anyone) and
she keeps it long and just curly enough to be exciting but not so much
as to be distracting, in consideration of how important a distinctive
haircut is for her popularity. Physically, she stays in shape in
order to keep up with the strict standards of appearance for women on
screen, except for a brief period when she put on significant weight,
only to have it go back to normal just when the weight was becoming
beneficial to her career. She dresses well and always takes great
care in her appearance, seeing it as the most important aspect of
herself.

Personality: Jenna is the epitome a star who thinks she is far
bigger than she really is. She brags often about her roles in TV,
theater, and movies, but most of her appearances are actually minor
and often completely ridiculous. For example, she gloats about her
appearance on the show “Night Court” in which she portrayed a werewolf
lawyer, despite the fact that the regular cast of the show blames her
for the show’s cancellation. Jenna is desperate for attention at all
times and will do anything to get it, throwing tantrums and faking
injuries to get it. Sometimes she resorts to singing loudly in a
melodramatic fashion at inopportune times, whenever she feels someone
else is getting more attention than her.

Jenna is also extremely self-serving and has difficulty empathizing
with others. In order to see an EMT she had a crush on, she spiked
Kenneth the page’s lunch with strawberry (which he is highly allergic
to) so he would have an attack and 911 would be called. Another
coworker observed this behavior and suspected her of being a complete
sociopath. He arranged for a test in which Kenneth would fake an even
more severe reaction. Jenna fortunately showed true remorse for her
actions. As such, the coworker downgraded her from sociopath to
“extreme narcissist.”

While her flaws are many and her narcissism seems to know no bounds,
there is some humanity hiding there, as demonstrated by her feelings
of remorse for harming Kenneth on more than one occasion. She once
accidentally burned a huge hole in Kenneth’s page jacket and again
feeling remorse attempted to get him a new one. She later helped
Kenneth by creating a “video personal essay” for him for his
application to work at the Beijing Olympics. Granted, the video
featured Jenna more than it featured Kenneth, but without it he
wouldn’t have made the application deadline. She does care about
others, especially when she realizes their misfortune is her fault.

Finally, there is a source for most of Jenna’s egotism and
self-serving behavior. She knows that her career in entertainment is
no guarantee and is easily threatened by others who might move in and
thus move her out. This paranoia is a significant portion of what
fuels her attention-seeking behavior. She assumes that if she can
still be the center of attention than her job is safe. She is also
insecure about her age and appearance, so she often lies about her age
and acts aggressively confident, overcompensating. There is more to
Jenna Maroney than the uninvited singing and the tantrums, but it
nearly takes a jack hammer to find it under all the armor she’s built
up to hide it.

Abilities: Jenna has absolutely no skills to speak of and, in
the context of Daisychain, is essentially completely useless. Her
entire life has been built around singing, acting, “slutting it up” to
get jobs, and doing impressions of Paris Hilton. As a super special
celebrity she doesn’t do much of anything for herself, let alone
others. She will, however, be quick to offer her services as a
performer to “boost morale” and, more importantly, draw attention to
herself, whether anyone is actually interested or not.

Manhattanite or outsider? Although she was living in Manhattan
at the time the events of Cloverfield occurred, this late in the game
it makes more sense that she would appear from an extremely similar
alternate version of Manhattan where the attack never happened.

History: Jenna’s history isn’t very elaborate as her life could
be considered normal for someone from her time and with her ambitions.
There were no epic battles, secret identities, magical abilities
(unless you count that time she dated David Blaine), or elaborate
plots for world domination - just a girl with a bit of talent, a dream
to be a star, (and very little shame). She was born and raised in
California until she moved to Illinois in order to study voice at
Northwestern University. She starred in many commercials and obscure
theater shows, including “Con Air: The Musical” and had bit roles in
“Night Court” and “Law & Order” before being given a starring role in
“The Girlie Show”, created by her friend Liz Lemon. Her need for
constant spoiling and attention was exacerbated when Tracy Jordan was
added to the cast of the show, increasing the frequency and severity
of her bad behaviors. Her worries about her career led her to take on
many roles outside of “TGS”, especially those that might have won her
an award someday. Of particular note was “Sing Them Blues, White
Girl: The Jackie Jomp-Jomp Story”, a biopic based on the life of Janis
Joplin, but renamed because the production company couldn’t get the
life rights. Finding the film to be doomed (or perhaps prematurely
celebrating its success), it is possible Jenna would go on a bit of a
bender, and the Manhattan she wakes up in could be extremely different
from the one she passed out in the night before.
